I’m not sure what it is about nooks that has such an enormous appeal for so many people, but I know for me, being an only child, I spent a lot of time on my own growing up, so would find cozy spots that would make me feel safe and hidden from the world where I could read, doodle or write stories.
I especially liked the closet in my bedroom, where I would drag blankets, pillows and a flashlight into, or behind boxes under the eaves in the attic…is that weird? Maybe it’s a primal thing…you know, Clan of the Cave bear type stuff… Whatever it is — and there are lots of things I think we shouldn’t analyze too much — when the world just gets a little too overwhelming, I still want to crawl into these cozy little spaces!
My definition of a nook is a space that’s smaller than a whole room, that’s enclosed on 3 sides, has enough room to lie down and have a nap or is comfy enough to spend a few hours with a great book!
The converted shed above is such a dreamy space, but I would hate it if it was full of mosquitoes or spiders. That’s not my idea of a good time! Photo from Love Thomas.

I think this nook is perfect for a Harlequin romance or a bodice ripper like the “Grey” books….not that I waste my time on those kinds of trashy novels

I love the idea of using a spot under the stairs as a reading retreat. Lots of pillows, a blankie, good book and I’ll be z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z….what? Did I fall asleep already?!

The nook that’s surrounded by books just begs to be occupied for hours on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Do you suppose the drawers below hide the fuzzy throw?

This nook that can be closed off with barn doors makes me want to run away and find it right now! How cool would it be to upcycle those doors to hide behind?!
This teenage girl’s room that I designed made use of the dormer window space as a nook for sleeping and dreaming the hours away.
Her request for saturated colors in the pink and orange families, just begged for the bed curtains to be made from Sari fabric. The silk fabric light shade with tassels contributes to the boudoir effect. Her parents and I were both thrilled when she pronounced it the best bedroom she’d ever had!
Do you have a special spot that you go and hide when you need a break from the world?
I think I feel a nap coming on…
